The Foxconn plant in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, the capital of the state of Tamil Nadu, employed about 17,000 people, but on December 18. It was closed after protests after more than 250 of its workers fell ill with food poisoning.

Apple has since given the factory a trial period after finding that some bedrooms and dining rooms did not meet the required standards.

Foxconn and Apple did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Selvaperunthagai, a member of the state assembly in the area, said Tamil Nadu Prime Minister Stalin told a meeting late Friday that the plant would reopen on Wednesday and employ 500 workers.

Government officials said Foxconn intended to gradually resume production, but did not say when the entire workforce would return to work.

Foxconn makes the iPhone 12 and tests the iPhone 13 at the Sriperumbudur plant, the only plant in India, government officials said. Apple has eight other providers in India.

Selvaperunthagai told Reuters that the state government will build shelters that will accommodate tens of thousands of workers from various industries to address concerns about idle and catering standards.

"The government clearly does not want such incidents to happen again," he said.

Tamil Nadu, one of the most developed states in the country with a population of over 70 million, is sometimes referred to as "Detroit Asia". The plants of companies such as BMW, Daimler, Hyundai, Nissan and Renault are located here.
